Quick Verdict

The name made me laugh before I trusted the label, but the mixed berry natural hydrate powder delivered balanced salt and clean flavor on the first sip. It’s salty, yes, but not the kind of salty that has me pushing the glass away. Easy to open, mixes in well, 40 calories a stick.

Buy if you:

  • Hate electrolytes that taste way too salty to finish
  • Want a fruity flavor over a bland salt hit
  • Struggle with packets you need scissors to open
  • Want NSF Sport certified, zero sugar sticks for travel or workouts

I Didn’t Trust the “Hydrate or Die” Name Either

The name made me laugh out loud before I even opened the box. “Hydrate or Die.” I think that is pretty funny. We’re no strangers to BUBS Naturals products, and they sent us these electrolytes for review, so I figured I’d stop judging the label and actually check what’s inside. If you want to see the current price, it’s on the Amazon listing here.

Here’s my situation with electrolytes: I sometimes love them, sometimes do not. If it’s way too much sodium, way too salty, I have a hard time with it. But I do love the ones with a really nice fruity flavor. So this BUBS Naturals natural hydrate powder in mixed berry was a coin flip for me going in. I was trying it for the very first time on camera.

What’s Actually in the Stick Packet

2000mg of electrolytes per serving, which the brand says is up to 3x more than most competitors. The pack I have holds 20 single sticks, each one 40 calories, which is great. No trans fat, no fiber, 7g of sugar, no protein, and then a list of extras like vitamin D and calcium packed in there. The electrolyte side comes from Pacific Ocean sea salt, magnesium glycinate, and dual potassium sources. Flavor is monkfruit plus a little natural cane sugar, so it’s zero the artificial stuff.

The First Sip: Salty, But Not Killing Me

First sip: salty hit up front, then the mixed berry pulls it back before it has a chance to turn punishing. That’s the thing that keeps me from finishing most electrolytes, the salt never lets up, and this one did.

And the smell threw me. I opened the packet and it smelled really good, but I kept saying it smelled like bubble gum. That sounds weird, I know that. It’s not bubble gum at all. It is definitely mixed berry. My nose just went somewhere else. The powder mixes in really well too once you froth it around.

The Powder Settles If You Cheap Out on Water

BUBS Naturals - Hydrate or Die Electrolytes Powder Packets for Fast Absorption | Premium 2000mg Electrolyte Powder | for

My one real gripe is on me, not the product. I read you’re supposed to use about 12 oz of water, and I definitely didn’t put in enough. When I looked at the glass there was powder sitting at the bottom that hadn’t dissolved. So my drink was a little more concentrated than it should’ve been, and I could see the leftover settling. Definitely need a bit more water in here. If you rush it like I did, you’ll get that undissolved layer at the bottom and a stronger salty hit than the formula intends.

The Packet Opens Without Scissors, Finally

I love the way this pack opens. The outer box has a tab that rips off so you can leave it sitting on the side, and then the individual sticks are just ready to go. That’s something I really appreciate, because I do find sometimes these ones are hard to open. They’re nice and easy here. Oftentimes I end up needing scissors, and then, you know, that kind of defeats the purpose of a grab-and-go stick. No scissors needed with these.

Who This Natural Hydrate Is Actually For

If you’re the person who gives up on electrolytes because they’re too salty, this is the one to try. That was my whole hesitation and this mixed berry natural hydrate cleared it. The single sticks slide into a gym bag or carry-on without a second thought, and at 40 calories each they don’t feel like a commitment. The NSF Sport cert is the one that matters for athletes, it means the formula is third-party tested for banned substances, not just self-declared clean. If salt has been the thing killing your electrolyte habit, this mixed berry clears the bar.

Mixed Berry vs. Citrus Electrolyte Sticks

BUBS also makes a lemon version, and I haven’t tried it, but here’s my read: the monkfruit sweetness in the mixed berry is noticeable, not cloying, but present. If that kind of fruity-sweet top note isn’t your thing, the lemon is probably the safer pick since citrus tends to cut through sweetness rather than layer on top of it. The 2000mg formula is identical either way, so the only real question is which one you’ll actually finish.

My Advice Before You Order

Measure your water. My biggest takeaway is to hit that 12 oz mark so the powder fully dissolves and the salt doesn’t spike. Give it a proper froth or stir instead of a lazy swirl. And don’t let the “Hydrate or Die” branding put you off, the label is cleaner than the name suggests. Start with one stick a day, see how the flavor and salt sit with you, and go from there.

Pros

  • Salty but balanced, not the overpowering hit that makes me quit other brands
  • Mixes in really well once you use enough water
  • Packets open easily, no scissors needed
  • 40 calories per stick with a good vitamin and mineral lineup
  • NSF Certified for Sport, vegan, gluten-free, zero of the artificial stuff

Cons

  • Powder settles at the bottom if you don’t use the full 12 oz of water
  • Still has a real salt presence, so hardcore salt-avoiders should test it slowly
  • Only tried mixed berry, and it reads slightly sweet

Frequently Asked Questions

How much water should I use per stick?

About 12 oz per stick. I used less than that and had powder settling at the bottom, so the drink came out more concentrated and saltier than intended. Hit the full 12 oz and it dissolves cleanly.

Is the mixed berry flavor artificial-tasting?

No, it’s naturally flavored with monkfruit and a little cane sugar. It smelled great when I opened it, and it reads as real mixed berry, not chemical. My nose kept saying bubble gum, but that’s just me.

What flavors does Hydrate or Die come in?

I reviewed the mixed berry, and I saw there’s a lemon version too. Both use the same 2000mg electrolyte formula, so pick whichever flavor you’ll drink more often.

Is this good for people who hate salty electrolytes?

Yes, with a caveat. There’s still a salty note, but it’s not the punishing kind that makes you quit. If you use the full water amount it stays balanced. If you’re extremely salt-sensitive, sip a diluted version first.

Does it have sugar or calories?

Each stick is 40 calories with 7g of sugar. Sweetness comes mostly from monkfruit extract plus a touch of natural cane sugar, so it’s not a zero-calorie product but it stays light.

Is it safe for athletes and drug testing?

It’s NSF Certified for Sport, which is the certification athletes look for. It’s also third-party tested, vegan, gluten-free, soy-free, and non-GMO, made in the USA. That’s the peace-of-mind side of it.

Can I drink it daily and not just for workouts?

Yes. The brand lists it as an ORS-compliant formula good for daily hydration, travel, and recovery, not only training. The single sticks make it easy to grab whenever, so it works for everyday sipping.

Do the packets tear open easily?

Yes, that was a highlight. No scissors needed. The outer box has a tab that rips off and the sticks open clean by hand, which I appreciate since plenty of these need scissors and defeat the whole grab-and-go point.
