Renpho Active Massage Gun with Heating and Cooling Review
The RENPHO Active Thermacool 2 switches hot to cold in seconds, weighs 1.48 lbs, and comes with 5 heads in a zip case. Here's what stood out.
The RENPHO Active Thermacool 2 is worth buying if you want recovery plus temperature therapy in one tool. It weighs 1.48 lbs, hits 3,200 RPM, and the heat/cold plate flips from 46°F to 113°F in seconds. Buy it if you want heat and cold without a separate ice pack.

How this review was made: written from my own video review of this product. Every opinion here is my own, from using it myself.
Quick Verdict
It flipped from cold to hot on my hand instantly, and I still don’t understand how. 1.48 lbs, 3,200 RPM, and I can’t get over how light it is compared to other massage guns I’ve tried.
Buy if you:
- want cold therapy and heat without owning two separate devices
- get hand fatigue holding heavier guns on yourself
- want to use the cold plate on puffy eyes with the motor off
- hate loose attachments rolling around a drawer
Skip if you:
- can’t tolerate deep pressure, the bullet head digs in too much for me
- only want a plain percussion gun with no temperature plate
- want to swap heads one-handed, the thermal head needs notch alignment and a lock

We Are No Strangers to RENPHO
We’ve reviewed several RENPHO massagers, and they’ve earned the benefit of the doubt, so when the RENPHO Active Thermacool 2 showed up, I’ll admit I was already rooting for it before I opened the case.
Right off the bat, absolutely love that it comes in a carrying case with a little handle. When you’re not using it, everything is tucked away. Because it also comes with accessories, and if you’re anything like me, nobody likes all the accessories laying around willy-nilly.
Then I picked up the gun itself. At 1.48 lbs it’s lighter than my last massage gun, and unlike that one I could hold the Thermacool 2 against my own shoulder for a full minute without my wrist complaining.
Unboxing It, Including the Cable Packaging
Everything came wrapped. Not one-piece-of-tape wrapped, properly wrapped, right down to the charging cable in its own little packaging. I actually said it out loud in the video because it caught me off guard for a recovery tool.
It’s rechargeable and the USB-C cable is in the box. The case is laid out so each of the five heads has its spot, which is the part I’ll still appreciate three months from now when I’m not hunting for the ball head under the couch.
Controls are three buttons. On, speed, temperature. There’s a small display on the front that shows the level and the temperature. That’s the entire learning curve.
The Bullet Head Digs In Too Much For Me
That’s the one head I’d skip, and I’ll say it plainly: I can’t handle the pain very well. It pinpoints hard. If you have a specific sharp pain somewhere, that hard plastic head is fantastic for it. My husband loves that one and most people do.
My favorites are the ball head and the flat head. The ball is comfortable, it spreads the force out, and I can hold it on a muscle without wincing. So the five heads aren’t five options you’ll all use. Realistically you’ll pick two and the rest stay in the case.
That’s not a flaw. But if you’re buying this because it comes with five attachments, know that pressure tolerance decides which ones matter to you.
Hot to Cold in Seconds, and It’s Instant
This is the head that sells the whole thing. It has a metal plate the other attachments don’t have, and it switches between hot and cold within seconds.
You line it up with the little notches and lock it into place. First time doing it I hadn’t practiced, and it took a second of fiddling to get the alignment right. Once it clicks, it’s solid.
I turned it on at level zero, then went through the cold settings. One, two, three… and then a fourth. I thought there were only three. There are actually four cold levels and four heat levels, which just gets better and better. The display tells you the temperature too: cold runs from 46°F to 57°F, heat from 102°F to 113°F.
I tried the cold on my hand while the massage was running. I never think to massage my hands. It felt really nice and cold, and you’re getting the benefit of the massage at the same time. Then I switched to heat. It is no longer cold, it is now hot. Instant. Which is crazy. I feel like it needs time to heat up or cool down. I really don’t even understand how it does it so quickly, but it does.
And level one is already loud enough in the good way, you can hear the percussion working. I always suggest working your way up rather than starting at the top. The RENPHO Active massage gun goes to 3,200 RPM, so there’s plenty of room above level one.

The Face Trick Most Buyers Skip
You can run the hot or cold plate without turning the massage on at all. I almost forgot to mention it in the video and it’s one of my favorite parts.
A lot of people own those frozen gel face masks for puffy eyes. Instead, you can hold this against your face with just the cold on. You’re not going to run the percussion up there unless you want to give yourself a black eye, so don’t do that. But getting the hot and cold benefit with the motor off is a use case most massage gun reviewers skip over.
What Annoyed Me
The thermal head swap is the only fiddly part. You have to line up the notches and lock it, which isn’t a problem once you’ve done it twice, but it’s not the just-yank-and-push action the other heads have. I fumbled it on camera.
And the heads that most people love are the ones I use least. If you’re pain-sensitive, you’re paying for attachments you’ll leave in the case.
Before You Order One
Charge it first, then start at level one. The USB-C charge takes roughly 2.5 hours and the battery is 2,500 mAh, so you’re not plugging in often.
Keep the case. It’s the only reason five heads stay organized. And know that the thermal plate is the feature you’re actually buying here, not the percussion, which plenty of cheaper guns do. If temperature therapy doesn’t interest you, buy a plain gun and save money. If it does, this one does it instantly and it’s 1.48 lbs, which is what makes it usable one-handed on yourself.
Pros
- Surprisingly light for how powerful it is, no hand fatigue holding it on yourself
- Hot and cold switch is instant, no waiting for the plate to change temperature
- Four cold levels and four heat levels, 46°F up to 113°F, with the temperature on the display
- Cold plate works on your face with the massage off, better than a frozen gel mask
- Carrying case keeps all five heads and the cable in one place
Cons
- The bullet head digs in too much if you’re pain-sensitive
- Thermal head needs notch alignment and a lock, fiddly the first time
- Several of the five heads will go unused depending on your pressure tolerance
What we’d improve
Two things the next version could fix without much effort:
- Thermal head attachment, the notch-and-lock system is more steps than the other heads. A magnetic or keyed snap would make the swap one-handed.
- No level markings on the temperature button, I genuinely thought there were three cold settings until I hit a fourth. Printing the count near the button, or a clearer step indicator, would avoid that.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the RENPHO Active Thermacool 2 FSA or HSA eligible?
Yes, it’s listed as FSA/HSA eligible. That matters if you have funds to use before year end, since recovery tools aren’t always covered. Confirm with your plan administrator before you submit it.
Can I take it on a plane in carry-on?
Generally yes, lithium battery devices go in carry-on rather than checked luggage. The case is 6.69 × 7.36 × 2.17 inches, so it fits in a backpack without a fight. Check your airline’s battery policy since rules vary.
How long is the warranty?
24 months. The model number is R-WMG13, which is the number you’ll need if you ever file a claim, so keep your order confirmation.
Does it shut off on its own?
Yes, there’s a 10-minute auto-off. It’s a safety feature so you don’t overwork one muscle group or leave the thermal plate running. If you want longer, just turn it back on.
Will it wake someone up in the next room?
Probably not at low levels, it’s rated around 40 dB. You can clearly hear it working at level one, but it’s a brushless motor hum rather than a rattle. Higher speeds get louder, as with any percussion gun.

The thermal plate is the reason to buy this over any cheaper percussion gun. If switching from a 46°F cold plate to 113°F heat in seconds sounds useful to you, get the Thermacool 2 at the link below. If it doesn’t, save your money.
