I Guessed My Portable Multi-Cooker Water Ratio Wrong
I plugged it in, the handle lit up, and I went straight for rice without reading the ratios. Classic me. This is the NutriChef 1.6 QT portable multi-cooker, and I was super excited because at first these get sold as just a portable rice maker, but it does way more than that.
The rice came out cooked and hot, but a little firm. That’s on me, not the machine. I did the one-for-one water thing I do on my regular rice cooker and the pot clearly wanted more. Totally trial and error, which is something I absolutely love, but I want you to know that going in.
Six Functions on a Light-Up Handle
The handle lights up the second you plug it in and cycles through the functions right there. Rice, soup, stew, noodles, congee, and a chafing-dish mode that just keeps food warm. That warm mode is the sneaky-useful one. If you bring lunch to work and have nowhere to heat it, you plug this in the corner and it warms your food through the day, which I think is pretty cool.
It arrived already assembled in the box. Super easy. All I had to do was plug it in. The pot has a minimum and a maximum fill line inside, a clear lid with steam vent holes, and a little measuring cup comes with it.
What Happened When I Cooked the Rice
One scoop of rice didn’t even reach the minimum line, so I bumped it to two scoops of rice and two scoops of water, plus a little splash more. Set the function to rice, it flashed, then showed 40 minutes. There’s no separate on button. The blinking stops and it just goes.
Forty minutes later I lifted the lid and there was rice. Cooked, hot, ready. The one odd thing: the display still showed 13 minutes left even though the rice looked done. That’s the tell that my water was short. If I’d added more, it would’ve needed those 13 minutes to finish properly. It was faster than I thought it would be, and that surprised me for a pot this size.
The Manual Won’t Tell You Ratios
My only real gripe: I looked through the instruction manual and there’s nowhere that tells you the ratios. No “one cup rice, one cup water” anywhere. I’m sure I could find it online, but I didn’t even look, so I flew blind and paid for it with slightly firm rice.
Next time I’d do about two cups of rice to three full cups of water. That’s my starting point after this run. It’s not a deal-breaker if you like experimenting, but if you want to nail dinner on night one, that missing info is annoying. One real hazard: the steam vents on the lid blow hot enough to burn. Don’t reach over the top of the pot while it’s running, approach from the side and lift the lid away from you.

Best For Dorms, Offices, and Single Portions
The 1.6 QT footprint is the entire reason to buy this. It sat on the corner of my desk without crowding anything, something my full-size rice cooker could never do. Dorm shelf, studio counter, office cubicle: anywhere a real appliance won’t fit, this one will.

My Advice Before You Cook Your First Batch
Add more water than you think, and let the timer finish instead of peeking early. My rice was firm because I shorted the water and the display was still counting down. Two cups rice to three cups water is where I’d start.
