I Absolutely Love New Luggage

I don’t know what it is, but I absolutely love new luggage. It just always looks so pristine. And these right here are fantastic. The InUSA TREND 28-inch hardside checked suitcase came packaged so perfectly that pulling it out of the box was already a good sign. Two colors landed in front of me: sand beige and orange. For anyone who travels regularly and has dealt with a hard-shell suitcase that weighed a ton before you packed a single thing, you already know the frustration. That’s the thing with a lot of hard-shell luggage in this size range. The shell protection comes at a cost: the bag itself is already heavy, which eats into your checked baggage weight limit fast. So finding something that’s lightweight AND hard-shell is a bigger deal than it sounds.

This is a 28-inch suitcase, which puts it firmly in large checked bag territory. It’s the kind of size you’re reaching for when you need to pack for 10 days or more, when you’re checking bags on a long-haul flight, or when you’re traveling with kids and need to consolidate everything into fewer bags. It’s a lot of bag. And the question is always: does it hold up at the size and price point? Let’s get into it.

What You’re Working With

The construction here is hardside and lightweight. The shell has a really nice feel to it, solid, rigid, but not the dense kind of heavy that wrecks your weight allowance before you’ve packed anything. As you can see when you look at the exterior, there are bumper guards on the side, which is definitely something I really like. Bumper guards protect the bag when it’s loaded onto carts, tossed into cargo, or sliding across conveyor belts. It’s not just cosmetic.

The trolley handle up top extends to two positions. There’s a stop at a shorter height, and then you can open it all the way up as well. So you have those two different options depending on your height or preference. Side handle is there too, which helps when you need to hoist the bag onto a luggage scale or lift it into overhead storage. And the spinner wheels, we’ll get to those in a minute because they’re my favorite thing about the whole bag.

Interior-wise, you’ve got the standard layout: clips on one side to hold clothes in place, and then the other side has a large zipper compartment. That zipper side tends to be my favorite because I just really like to jam-pack those clothes inside there, and I don’t want them moving all over the place. The zipper keeps everything locked in so nothing shifts around mid-flight. Simple. Useful.

If the 28-inch is more than you need, it’s worth knowing this same line comes in smaller sizes and carry-ons as well. So depending on what size you are looking for, there are options. But if you’re in the market for a large checked bag, this is the one we’re focusing on here.

The Spinner Wheels Are the Best Part

Definitely, as I said, my favorite thing: the fact that they have really great spinners on them. Spinner wheels on a 28-inch suitcase matter more than on smaller bags. When a bag is that big and fully loaded, you’re not dragging it, you’re rolling it. And if the wheels don’t rotate smoothly in all 4 directions, you’re fighting it every step of the way through the airport.

These wheels felt smooth and responsive. A 28-inch hard-shell loaded with clothes is not a light thing to push around. The difference between mediocre spinner wheels and good ones shows up immediately when the bag is full and you’re navigating a crowded terminal. The lightweight construction feeds directly into how the spinner wheels perform too. Because the shell itself isn’t adding unnecessary weight, the bag doesn’t become unmanageable once packed. A lot of times these types of suitcases already have a lot of weight to them, so then you can’t pack as much, and that is never a great thing. Here, you get the hard-shell protection without sacrificing packing capacity. That combination is what makes this one stand out.

And the packaging, for what it’s worth, was great. They clearly took care in how this was shipped. It came out of the box looking pristine, exactly what you want when you’re buying luggage sight unseen from Amazon. First impressions with luggage matter, and this one made a good one.

The Handle Has Only Two Stops

Here’s the one thing to know before you buy: the trolley handle only has 2 fixed positions. A short stop and then fully extended. That’s it. There’s no in-between adjustment point. For most people that’s fine, one height works for shorter travelers, the full extension works for taller ones. But if you’re somewhere in the middle height-wise and neither position feels perfectly natural, you’re picking the lesser of two options rather than dialing in the exact height you want.

It’s not a deal-breaker at this size and price point. Multi-stop handles are typically found on higher-end luggage. But it’s worth knowing going in, especially if you have strong opinions about handle ergonomics. You’ll either fit comfortably into one of the two positions or you’ll notice it every time you roll the bag.

Everything else about the bag felt solid. The hard shell looks like it’ll take the rough treatment of checked baggage without cracking or warping. The bumper guards add another layer of protection at the corners and sides where most of the abuse happens. But the 2-position handle is the one “almost” on an otherwise clean design.

Who Needs a Bag This Size

A 28-inch checked suitcase is a specific commitment. It’s big. You’re not grabbing this for a weekend trip or a 3-day conference. This is the bag for when you’re gone for a week or more, when you’re traveling with family and need one large bag instead of three small ones, or when you’re someone who refuses to check multiple bags on a long-haul flight.

It’s also the right call if you’ve been burned by soft-sided bags. Soft sides flex, which sounds convenient, but they also compress under pressure in cargo holds, they don’t protect fragile items the same way, and they wear down faster on the outside. A hard shell like this holds its shape. Your stuff stays where you packed it.

For frequent travelers, people running through airports a few times a month, the spinner wheels are a non-negotiable at this bag size. Dragging a 28-inch suitcase on 2 fixed wheels through a crowded terminal is miserable. Third: it came out of the box with a thin protective film on it that I hadn’t peeled off yet during the review. That’s normal for new luggage, just take a moment to remove any protective coverings before you start loading it up. Nothing complicated, just something to do on your first unboxing.

What We’d Improve

Two things that a future version of this bag could fix without much effort:

• More handle height stops, The trolley handle locks at only 2 positions: short and fully extended. Adding a mid-point stop would make this bag comfortable for a wider range of heights without any other design change needed.
• A TSA-approved lock built in, The exterior zipper is solid, but for a checked bag at this size, a built-in TSA lock would be a meaningful upgrade. Right now you’d need to add your own, which is an extra step and an extra item to buy.
