Quick Verdict

Standing in front of these in the brightest part of the afternoon, I could still see a sliver of light, but barely. That’s a pass most blackout curtains fail. The Joydeco panels zigzagged onto the rod in 45 seconds and feel thick and well-made.

Buy if you:

  • Need a dark bedroom for sleeping in or daytime naps

Blackout Curtains Revealed the Midday Light Truth

It was clearly daylight outside when I hung these blackout curtains for review, the middle of the afternoon, the brightest time of the day. And check these out. Standing right in front of them with the sun blasting outside, it is not 100% blackout. I can see some light. But this is pretty impressive. There are lots of blackout blinds out there that are really, really not blackout at all, so these Joydeco blackout curtains are actually super good by comparison.

That’s the whole reason this test matters. Plenty of panels market themselves as blackout and then let a wash of daylight straight through. These didn’t.

What You’re Hanging On The Rod

These are a two-pack of 100% polyester microfiber panels with eight silver grommets per panel. The pair I tested measured 52 inches wide by 84 inches long. The fabric is really nice and thick, really good quality. Joydeco uses a triple-weave construction, and the listing says dark colors block 80%+ of sunlight while lighter colors block 60%+. They also claim the dense fabric absorbs over 35% of outside noise and helps with room temperature.

Noise reduction35%+ outside noise

45 Seconds To Hang Both Panels

Installation was the easy part. You’ve just got these really big loops up top, and you kind of zigzag them onto the rod. It took me 45 seconds to do both of them. No tools, no fuss. Once they’re up, it’s a two-pack, so you can open them up to see the beautiful view, then close them when you want it nice and dark. The fabric came out of the bag wrinkle-free, which saved the usual iron-or-steam wrestling match most curtains demand.

Measure First Or You’ll Pay For It Later

I went a little bit too long on my measurements. At 84 inches, the 52×84 pair pooled past my window, so I’m just going to get them hemmed. It’s no big deal in my case, but it’s the kind of small miss that turns a five-minute job into an extra errand. Highly recommend you measure your window first before you get some. Joydeco offers 20+ sizes, so there’s almost no reason to guess. Pin down your width and your drop, then order the closest match instead of eyeballing it like I did.

Joydeco Blackout Curtains Review: Do They Really Block Light?

Who These Blackout Curtains For Bedroom Use Make Sense For

If bright mornings wake you up, these are the easy fix. Light sleepers, shift workers crashing during the day, and anyone in an apartment with a streetlight outside the window are the obvious crowd. The thickness that blocks light also helps with privacy and a bit of insulation. With 20+ colors, they slot into blackout curtains for living room setups just as well as a bedroom, including darker bedroom blue and burgundy tones if you want something other than basic black.

Better Than The “Blackout” Panels That Aren’t

These Joydeco panels outperform cheap “blackout” curtains that let daylight pour straight through. I’ve seen plenty that look the part and then let daylight pour through like a sheer. These Joydeco panels are in a different tier. They’re not a 100% blackout liner like the heavy commercial stuff used in home theaters, and they won’t pitch your room into total darkness. But for everyday sleep and privacy, the thick triple-weave fabric does the job most so-called blackout curtains only pretend to.

Buy The Right Length And You’re Done

Get your measurements right and installation takes five minutes flat with zero tools or adjustments needed. Measure the rod-to-floor drop and your window width before ordering, since the loops only slide onto rods that fit the 1.6 inch grommets. If you order long like I did, factor in a quick hem. They’re machine washable in a mesh bag, no bleach, so they should hold their color over time.

Pros

  • Blocks most light even in direct midday sun, far better than typical “blackout” panels
  • Thick, good-quality fabric that feels durable
  • Took 45 seconds to hang both panels, no tools
  • Came out wrinkle-free, no ironing needed
  • Lots of size and color options to choose from

Cons

  • Not 100% blackout, a little light still gets through
  • Easy to order too long if you don’t measure carefully, which means hemming
  • Grommets only fit rods up to the 1.6 inch inner diameter

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these blackout curtains 100% blackout?

No, they’re not 100% blackout. Standing in front of them in midday sun I could still see a little light come through. That said, they block far more than most curtains labeled blackout, so the room gets dark enough for sleeping.

Do they fit standard curtain rods?

Yes, the grommets have a 1.6 inch inner diameter that works with most standard and decorative rods. You just zigzag the loops onto the rod. Check that your rod fits under 1.6 inches before ordering.

How do I clean them?

They’re machine washable, ideally in a mesh laundry bag. Skip the bleach to keep the color from fading. The polyester microfiber is wrinkle-resistant, so they should hang fine after washing.

What if I order the wrong length?

If they’re too long, you can get them hemmed, which is what I’m doing with mine. To avoid the extra step, measure your window’s width and the rod-to-floor drop first. Joydeco offers 20+ sizes, so you can usually find a close match.

Do they help with noise and temperature?

Joydeco lists over 35% noise absorption and thermal insulation that helps regulate room temperature. The dense fabric does feel thick enough to dampen sound and hold in some heat or cool. It won’t soundproof a room, but it takes the edge off outside noise.

Can I use these in a living room, not just a bedroom?

Yes. They come in 20+ colors and a wide range of sizes, so they work for living room windows just as well as a bedroom. You can open the two-pack to enjoy the view and close them for darkness or privacy.

Do darker colors block more light than lighter ones?

Yes. The listing says dark colors block 80%+ of sunlight while lighter colors block 60%+. If maximum darkness is your goal, go with a darker shade like black, burgundy, or a deep blue.

How many panels come in a pack?

It’s a two-pack, so you get a pair of panels. That lets you split them open to reveal the window and close them together for full coverage. One order covers a standard single window.
