Watch Our Review

With summer right around the corner, I need ways to keep my dog cooler. Wrapping him up like a burrito was clearly not going to help, so that idea got scrapped fast. What I had instead was the furrybaby dog cooling mat, sent for our review. And by our review, I clearly mean Walter’s review.

Quick Verdict

Touch it and you feel it right away, cooler than the room, not freezing, just a few degrees down. That’s exactly what a dog wants when it’s 90 out and they keep abandoning their regular bed. Walter’s going to live on this thing all summer.

Buy if you:

  • Live somewhere hot and your dog keeps ditching their normal bed
  • Want a cool spot that also protects your couch cushions
  • Travel or do car trips and need something that folds up
  • Have a medium dog or cat and want a washable surface

Keep Walter Cool With a Dog Cooling Mat

Walter’s tells on himself every summer: he starts the night on his padded bed and by morning he’s wedged against the bathroom tile. A cooling mat is just giving him that cold-floor moment on purpose, somewhere that isn’t your bathroom at 6 a.m.

What The Mat Actually Is

It’s a self-cooling mat, not a plugged-in gadget. The cooling comes from the material itself, that nylon cooling fabric with a Q-Max rating of at least 0.5, which is the number that tells you how cool something feels the second you touch it. The medium is 35 inches long by 24 wide and just over half an inch thick, so it’s flat and easy to tuck onto a couch, a crate floor, or the car.

First of all, I wish you could feel this. It is so soft. That surprised me because I half expected a stiff, plasticky gel pad. Instead it’s soft on top with the cooling material worked in.

How Cool Does It Really Get?

The Q-Max rating of 0.5 isn’t marketing math, you feel it the second your palm lands on the fabric. It reads a few degrees below room temperature and holds there passively, no water, no gel pack, no freezer. That’s cooler than the tile in most houses, which is the whole reason dogs go looking for tile in the first place.

What it is, is a surface that reads as noticeably cooler than any other blanket or bed your dog would lie on. On a hot day that difference is enough to make a dog choose the mat over the floor. That’s the whole game. The grippy backing means it doesn’t slide out from under him when he flops down either, which sounds minor until you’ve watched a dog chase a sliding mat across tile.

The “It’s Not An Ice Pack” Reality

The one thing worth setting straight: this cools by contact, not by refrigeration. If you’re picturing your dog lying on something cold like a freezer pack, that’s not what this is. It pulls a few degrees below room temperature and holds there. When a big warm dog parks on it for a while, the spot right under him warms up, and he’ll usually shift to a fresh cool patch. That’s normal for every self-cooling mat, but the marketing language around “instant cooling” can set you up to expect more chill than any passive fabric can deliver. Go in expecting a comfortable cool spot, not air conditioning, and you’ll be happy.

Who This Mat Is For

Dogs that abandon their bed in heat, or any pet seeking a cool couch spot that also protects upholstery. That’s the core buyer. If your dog likes to lay on the couch, this is really great, it doubles as couch protection and gives them a nice cool spot at the same time. On the floor it works just as well, and the grippies keep it planted.

Medium (35″x24″) handles most dogs up to retriever size; go Large (42″x28″) or X-Large (48″x30″) if your dog sprawls. Either way it folds down to roughly the thickness of a yoga mat, which makes it an easy addition to the car for any trip where your dog will be baking in the back seat.

Cooling Mat vs A Regular Dog Bed

Padded beds trap heat; cooling mats stay a few degrees below room temp. Swap by season: cooling mat in summer, padded bed in winter for joint support. All that plush filling traps heat, which is exactly why a hot dog walks away from it and lies on bare tile instead. This mat flips that. It’s thin, breathable, and cool to the touch, so it becomes the spot your dog seeks out instead of avoids. A regular bed still wins in winter or for older dogs who want cushioning for their joints, so a lot of homes end up keeping both and swapping by season. If your issue is specifically heat, the cooling mat is the fix, not another fluffy bed.

My Advice Before You Buy

Size up: a mat that’s too small leaves part of your dog on warm floor. Place it where your dog already seeks cool (tile, doorway, corner). A mat that’s too small means half your dog hangs off onto the warm floor and defeats the point. Put it where your dog already goes to cool off, the tile, the doorway, the corner, so they associate it with relief instead of a new object to be suspicious of. And know it’s machine washable, so you can toss it in when it gets furry without babying it. Air dry it and pat the filling back into shape.

Pros

  • Cooler to the touch immediately, a few degrees below the room and it stays that way
  • Surprisingly soft on top, not a stiff gel pad
  • Non-slip grippies on the underside keep it from sliding
  • Works on floors, couches, crates and in the car, plus doubles as couch protection
  • Machine washable and folds up light for travel
  • Multiple sizes and colors to match your dog

Cons

  • It’s cool, not cold, no ice-pack chill so set expectations accordingly
  • The spot under a big dog warms up over time, they’ll need to shift
  • Soft fabric surface isn’t built for heavy chewers

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the cooling mat need water or refrigeration to work?

No. It’s a self-cooling fabric that stays a few degrees cooler than the room on its own, no water, no gel, no freezer. You just lay it down and it works from the material’s Q-Max rating of 0.5 or higher.

Is it safe if my dog chews or licks it?

The fabric is OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certified, meaning it’s tested against 1,000-plus regulated chemicals, so the materials are safe against skin. That said, it’s a soft mat, not a chew toy, so a determined chewer could still tear it. Supervise heavy chewers.

What size should I get for my dog?

Measure your dog lying flat and pick a size that fits them fully. Medium is 35″x24″, Large is 42″x28″, and X-Large is 42… 48″x30″. Size up rather than down so no part of your dog hangs onto the warm floor.

Can I put it in a crate or the car?

Yes, that’s one of its strengths. At just over half an inch thick and foldable, it drops easily into a crate, onto a car seat, or on grass at the park. The non-slip backing helps it stay put on smooth surfaces.

How do I clean it?

It’s machine washable. Wash it, then air dry or lightly iron, and pat the filling to restore its shape. That makes it easy to keep fresh through a hairy, muddy summer without hand-scrubbing.

Will it work for cats too?

Yes. It’s designed for medium dogs and cats alike. Cats tend to seek out cool surfaces even more than dogs, so a lot of them take to it quickly, especially the medium on a shelf or windowsill.

How long does the cooling effect last during use?

The mat continuously stays cooler than the room, but the exact spot a dog is lying on warms up under their body heat. When they move or shift to a fresh area, that patch is cool again within a short time. It’s a self-refreshing surface, not a battery that runs down.

Is there a return policy if my dog won’t use it?

Yes, it comes with a 30-day refund or replacement window and free returns are available. So if your dog snubs it, you’re not stuck. Check the current terms on the product page before buying.

Loses a bit for expectation management, it’s cool to the touch, not cold, and the marketing oversells the chill. But it’s soft, it stays a few degrees under the room, the grippies keep it planted, and it folds for the car. Skip it if you wanted an ice pack; a longer-holding cool patch under a heavy dog would push this to a five.
